Jisue Choi, a thirteen-year-old girl, is an eighth-grade student at BASIS Tucson North. She has been studying the piano since she was five years old with her dad, Dr. Kyungsun Choi, who is a well-known pianist in Tucson. She has also been playing the violin since the age of six. Her violin teachers include Dr. Laura Tagawa and Mr. Rollin Medcalf.
Jisue participated in and won many local competitions including Civic Orchestra of Tucson’s Young Artists’ Competition, Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists’ Concerto Competition, Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra Scholarship Competition, Tucson Music Teachers Association (TMTA) Merit Scholarship Auditions, and Arizona State Music Teachers Association’s James R. Anthony Honors Recital.
As a pianist, Jisue has performed at numerous venues: Studio Recitals, TMTA KUDOS Recitals, TMTA Command Performances, TMTA Barnes and Noble Recitals, and TMTA Ensemble Concerts. She attended the Arizona Piano Institute Summer Festival in 2016 and 2017, where she studied with many teachers including Professor Elizabeth Pridonoff, an Emeritus Professor at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. Jisue completed the Arizona Study Program Piano Level 12 when she was in seventh grade.
In August 2017 Jisue joined the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra (TPYO) and enjoyed large ensemble performances as a violinist. She was chosen as one of the top twelve artists at the last TPYO Scholarship Competition in spite of being the youngest in the orchestra. As an orchestra member, she participated in workshops with the San Diego Symphony orchestra and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.
In March 2018 Jisue performed Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and two pieces from the Russian repertoire with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra as one of chosen TPYO performers.
Jisue loves reading books, watching movies, and listening to classical music and K-Pop. She earned her Taekwondo Black belt when she was ten years old and her favorite sport is swimming. One of her summer plans this year is learning modern dance and she hopes to be a dentist and professional musician in the future.
