Orly Liu was born on May 2, 2008, in Tucson and started playing the piano when she was three and half years old. Her current piano teacher is Dr. Svetlana Arakelova, who has a reputation of being an outstanding and superb piano teacher with many students winning numerous competitions locally and statewide. Orly has been with Mrs. Arakelova for four years and has made tremendous improvement ever since.
During the past few years, Orly has won a number of competitions, including:
- 2015 and 2017: Civic Orchestra of Tucson Young Artists’ Competition, both First Places in the Junior Piano Division (for Grade 8 and under).
- 2015, 2016, 2017: Arizona State Music Teachers Association the James R. Anthony Honors Recital, Medalists with Distinction (the highest possible award).
- 2015 and 2016: Tucson Musical Teachers Association (TMTA) Merit Scholarship Auditions - First Prizes in Solo A Division. She was in Germany early this summer and thus missed taking part in the 2017 competition.
Orly loves music so much that she persuaded her mother to let her take violin lessons. She is now the Concertmaster in the Catalina Foothills School District’s Elementary School Orchestra; its inaugural performance was on December 7, 2017.
She has always thought of music as a way to achieve peace. One day, when her pets were feeling nervous, she hummed a tune and they settled down.
Being an enthusiastic student at school, Orly was very blessed to be selected for its gifted and talented program. Although a fourth grader, she is learning fifth grade math and English.
In her spare time, Orly is passionate about reading autobiographies, history, fantasy, and mythology books, among others. In addition, she has been dancing ballet since she was two and half years old to improve body coordination. She is also a very brave basketball player, having sacrificed a front tooth in a game earlier this year.
Orly is a people-oriented girl and a very loyal friend. She has three pet chickens and is deeply fond of them. Orly loves to write books based on and dedicated to them. Lately, she has been thinking about becoming a novelist since she heartily enjoys putting her wild imagination into lively words.
