Quinton Nickum is a Junior at Mountain View High School. He began playing Clarinet in fifth grade, and later began lessons with Kevin Holzman in eighth grade while in Tortolita Middle School. Currently studying with Dr. Daniel Becker, he plays in a variety of ensembles, including the University of Arizona Honor Wind Quintet, the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, and the Mountain View High School Wind Ensemble. He also plays in the Sunset Wind Quintet, made of musicians from the youth orchestra.
Quinton has been an active participant in both Arizona Regional and All-State festivals, and is currently a three-year All-State member. He has played principal in All-State band and is principal in the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra. In 2015, he performed as a winner of the Senior Solo Recital competition at the Northern Arizona University’s Curry Summer Music Camp, and more recently received a special citation in the 2016 Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra Scholarship competition. In 2017 he won first place in the Senior Winds/Percussion division of the Young Artists’ Competition of the Civic Orchestra of Tucson.
Quinton enjoys model building and painting, and is fan of film and film music. His favorite composers include Stravinsky, Maslanka, Holst, and Brahms; his favorite music group is the Chicago Symphony.
